Put it this way. In the beginning was mathematical law, by which means the totally symmetric unified field, (meaning that the unified field was totally undifferentiated, had no information- just energy), lost its energy and its symmetry as the universe expanded. In biblical times letters were numbers and words were like equations. The only conclusion I can come to if we accept both science and religious teaching, which I am wont to do, is that the "word" in the Gospels means mathematical law. Alexander is right. There was nothing in the physical universe in the beginning except complete symmetry, nothing but pure energy. But the laws of physics which are mathematical were inherent in the universe.

The laws of physics contain information. They are the DNA of the universe. So where was this information stored. How did the quarks know what to do at low energy? I think the big question is, where was this information stored when the physical universe was totally undifferentiated? There seems to be no physical mechanism for it.

So looking at it from this perspective, god is mathematics and physics. God is the DNA of the universe. This so-called universe DNA naturally led to intelligent species possessing consciousness. So many are apt to make the leap of faith and postulate that the laws of nature were stored in the medium of consciousness, and that this medium developed intelligence, if it did not already have it, and that we humans and perhaps other species get to sample both the consciousness and the intelligence, and perhaps even contribute to it.
