Alexander:

Again, the point here is not to enter into a debate about whether one believes in the authority of science; the point is to glean what the arguments are about our own unique perspectives. There is no reason to complain about this or deplore it. Without a perspective, any debate is a dead finish. And this is a good opportunity to extinguish a misconception that has yet to die its richly deserved death: it is just not possible to talk about our place in the universe as if our expositions of scientific inquiry were quite independent of our own perspective on reality. But it seems your refusal to engage the issues is a tactical, not a principled, one, since you depend on smug, gracelessness rather than emerging arguments. Hence, insofar as your argument is effective, it is unreasoned; and insofar as it is reasoned, it appears more like an abyss involving the danger of seeing a fundamental identity lost in a miasma of fears.
