Why Does Hell Exist?

This has been a question in my mind for eons. Usually, punishments are used to correct an unwanted behavior. Sometimes, as with jail, the punishment is simply to keep the punishee from doing further harm. But hell doesn`t work with these. Since it is eternal, the purpose can`t be to correct behavior. If the purpose were to keep a "sinner" from sinning further, it would suffice to simply let him die; torturing him for eternity isn`t necessary. The only use I can see for hell is simply revenge, God saying, "You hurt me, so I`m gonna hurt you back." I can`t really see God saying that. If he does, we`re all screwed. But really, why would hell exist? |
