Why do you say that if hell is not eternal then people will always consider their sins will be forgiven? And what`s wrong with it if they do think they`ll be forgiven?

I don`t think God says that either... that`s why hell seems so illogical. When our parents punish us, they are trying to help us by making us better people. What is God trying to do when he punishes us with hell?
