Agreed. The ancients who developed religion were trying to understand the universe just as scientists are today. Only the techniques available to them, methods like meditative practices, gave them information on a spiritual world as well as the physical world.

The scientists have just replaced meditative practices with good experiments. Both share the use of logic and mathematics. Someone like Witten who purportedly spends most of his time staring out his window may in essence be using a form of meditation as well.

Where I went to school it was said that real mathematicians already knew the math intuitively before they began their studies. They just needed a jargon with which to express it. So as with Einstein, logic and good intuition are fundamental to discovery in theoretical physics.
