"Loggers are not farmers."

Exactly correct. I was only using them for a comparison.

"When they log on national forests, they will not pay loggers to plant trees just because they are nice. They will do it because the U.S. Forest Service, acting as agents for the People of the United States by laws enacted in Congress, require them to plant those trees as a condition of the sale."

Correct as well, but still wouldn't it be stupid to cut down a tree for lumber and not to plant another as replacements?

sorry about that...

anywho.

"The original question is about forests which actually belong to the government."

Actually not. We own those forests the government is merely the people we have around to make sure they stay in good condition.

"will building adequate firebreaks by harvesting
trees in our national forest NOW as a regular practice RESULT in a net saving of trees and help the ozone?"

Well yes to the first. Just think how many MILLIONS of acres of trees would still be around if we had those buffers. I really doubt cutting trees would have any effect on the ozone. Since we get most of our oxygen from ocean plants. YOu could cut donw all the trees and actually have a net bonus of oxygen since Rain forests produce more carbon dyoxide then oxygen.

God Bless,
-Aaron
