The forces of which I speak are real and measurable. The center of gravity will differ from the center of mass, depending on the shape of the mass. To determine the center of mass it is necessary to know the geometry of the mass, but the focus of the resultant gravitational vector at a given point will be determined by the vector addition of the gravitational forces of all particles in the mass acting at the point. One device that could do so is a plumb bob. Knowledge of outside conditions is not necessary.
