If consciouseness is a complexity, then all complex system are conscious by this definition. If consciouseness is defined as a complexity of carbon-based molecular systems, then say, computers are ruled out, and so on.

That is why before we discuss concsious protons and electrons we should at least know WHAT IS THAT we are talking about (=define what EXACTLY we mean by consciouseness). Othervise we are bound to ambiguity: you call atom conscious but I do not think so.
