The problem is that it takes too much time for a molecule to move from one end of the neuron to the other, not to talk about molecules finding each other. But if you don't think that all human's memory is the size of a hard disk, then there must be a very complicated structure inside the neuron. Concerning the electric activity inside the neuron there is a question whether there are good enough insulators. And is there anything transparent enough for optical solution. This is partly why Hameroff proposed this strange solution of microtubules and quantum effects (quantum memory etc). But it's not clear why exactly microtubules (protein transport mechanism of body cell) must be where quantum effects happen. Quantum superposition like quantum memory is also very sensitive to outside effects, especially temperature, except perhaps when it happens in a very small area. Unfortunately that's all I know about the physical side of it. |
