Why The Need For S Prophet?

It's interesting to me that within the formula for successful religion there seems to be the requirement for a spokesperson/prophet. I'm not a religious person, but I think I have a couple of valid questions - Why is this so? Could a religion be successful without a prophet/figurative leader?
