Luis, Long Ago In College We Did "counting Photons" Lab.

Blue Hg lamp, mirrored Cs photomultiplier chilled by melting ice indeed counted individual energy states of e/m field (=photons).

In another lab we used Geiger counter to count photons from x-ray tube.

Yet in another UV spectrometer experiments we counted UV photons as dark grains on a film (the larger the energy of a single photon, the bigger "mark" it leaves, so the easier to count 'em).
