The reality then of jets originating from the accretion disc is yet to be observed.

Have a read of http://oposite.stsci.edu/pubinfo/PR/1999/43/index.html. You are right in saying that no one has actually seen the jets coming off the accretion disk but such is the nature of this work. The objects are so small that it is virtually impossible to image them. The best you can do is propose a model to explain an observation, make further observations and verify your data then see if matches the models predictions. If not, the model is chucked out.

what can of worms would this uncover if jets were proved to originate from a solid mass object bigger than a neutron star

In such a case, science will do what it always has done, revise the theories and models.
