Check with a motor supply company first because I am sure this suggestion will not work with that type of motor. Some of the older washing machines did have multi-speed motors but I haven't seen one in ages.

I used an 18" pulley from an old commercial washer for my grinding machine. With it, I use a 1.5hp gearmotor and a Vari-Cone pulley this gives me a final speed of 2-6 RPM which is more than adaquate for the larger mirrors.

Steve, Since you have made some mirrors, most on machines, then you know it takes much much longer to finish a mirror by machine than by hand for the first few. Because of that, I might suggest that you pattern your machine based on the one you used.
