For once I am in complete agreement with you.

The purpose of god, one of them, is to induce morality into an otherwise immoral world which developed by natural means. Nature is cruel. The evidence for that, including the cruelity of evolution, is abundant. And Jesus perhaps more than any other taught us to lesson that cruelity, especially in our own nature. He taught us the spirit behind the law. But not to do away with them.
