If by universe you mean our universe that is visible with Hubble and other telescopes (eyes, microscopes, etc), then the answer to why I don't think this universe has always existed is due to the big bang theory (e.g., Hawking's and Penrose's singularity theorem, CMB radiation, etc). According to the big bang the universe had a beginning.
