Well the proper term is soil. More exactly, granular which is sands, and cohesive which is silts and clays. Dirt is not a word, but rather a laments phrase for soil. I like soil. What I really like is varved or laminated clay. You take a cylindrical splitspoon sample of varved clay, spilt half of it open with a knife and spread apart the two halves. Many many layers upon one another. A clear proof that the world is older than 6000 years.
