Hinduism acualy anticipates the loss of self-awareness, Buddism calls this nirvana, I forgot the Hindi term.
I only used "soul" as a word convient, not to pin a terminology.
Awareness has many "levels" and many meanings-- conciousness, subconsiousness, superconciousenss (LSD and other psycho-chemicals), REM, etc.
Also, to what do you want to be aware? self? the universe? taste buds? hot and cold???
