Are you sure that African music doesn't have harmony?

I'm not an ethnomusicologist but all my references tell me harmony is exclusive to European music. Of course that's meant in a traditional sense, since most musical cultures today already assimilated European techniques.

Keep in mind that harmony has a very precise meaning in music theory. It refers to the construction of chords and chord progressions. When Mark Knopfler said "check out Guitar George, he knows all the chords", he was talking about a concept that was initially developed in the Medieval Catholic Church and perfected over six centuries.

So if you like our music, you have the Church to thank for!
