I mostly listen to rock and roll and I think it would be impossible to make it sound so good without the traditional chord structures. Basic blues is really just three major chords.

One of the most beautiful works of music, in my opinion, is Abbey Road (by the Beatles). The vocal harmonies they use in it are just breathtaking, the likes of which I've never heard in popular music. It probably echoes some of the original harmonies made by monks in the catholic church.
