Alex,

You or I could be given key portions of Deep Blue's algorithms and decipher those statements down to one line statements. The issue of understanding would never exist. There is not some understanding module within Deep Blue. It is just carrying out instructions and utilizing table lookups (past moves, probable moves based on previous strategies, etc). Deep Blue understands nothing about chess. It is simply executing programs - that's it. It could just as well be a sophisticated machine stamping widgets. The understanding is the same.
