Alex,

I'm utterly amazed how you perceive the events of history so radically different. Of course, I can acknowledge views other than the way many Americans perceive history as being more 'objective', however whatever the reason I cannot acknowledge that the Soviet Union was right in shooting down that Korean Airliner. If security was the issue, the Soviet pilots could have forced that airliner down in Soviet territory and confiscated the plane if necessary. The fact that this wasn't done leads me to think that the Soviet leadership is not the saints that you would like to make them.

Additionally, the United States had all volunteer army in most of our history. It seems that the Soviet Union required military service despite the fact that your army far outnumbered our army. If we were the aggressive nation that you pictured as you grew up then it seems the opposite should have been the case.

In any case, I'm not here to engage in political discussions. Although, having lived the majority of my life during the Cold War I have an interest in your view only because it is far different than mine.

Warm regards, Harv
