In science, is the curiousity (scientific) superior to the application of science to bring socail development ? eg Do we study evolution and big and bang and other stuff , seemingly having long term consequences in the understanding of our universe , to 'know where we came from' or to know how can we improve our standard of living by application of this information ?

Which of the two is important ? Do they go hand in hand ? Is there a difference of opinion about this (ie is it a debatable thing or understood matter) ?
