So often you get from experiment NOT what you expected - and you ask: what the hell is going on there? You want to find WHY, run more accurate experiment and deviate more and more from original goal into newly found phenomenon. And it always like this in science - discoveries are where you do not expect them.

So, main driver in science is personal curiosity and desire to find out what is wrong - why prediction and observation do not match.
