I am astonished by this!.
On a GEM, he should only have needed to move the tube forward a fraction of an inch to get balance in this axis. He might have been low on weight on the main counterweight shaft (since the weight of the entire assembly has risen), but Celestron sell extra weights for exactly this reason!.
It sounds as though he spoke to somebody who was having a bad day!.... :-)
I have run 2" eyepieces on a C8, without problems by adjusting this way.
