Sounds as though he may well have made the remarkably common error of getting a scope that was really bigger than he has the inspiration to use. Larger units, do take more setting up, and more time to thermally equalise, and unless you are sure that this is what you want to do, a smaller scope may well be the better bet.
Rather sad really. :-(
Worth realising that there are plenty of people who want to buy a good OTA even now. Goto, is _not_ the 'be all and end all' of astronomy. OK the price will have fallen rather sharper than at other times in the last few years (the current low price of units and the economic situation is depressing the market), but the unit is still saleable, or somebody might offer to swap it for something like a new Nexstar 8, that he might get on with a lot better.
