I don't know exactly what your question means. What do you mean when you say the inability to retrieve the probe hasn't satisfied your curiosity?

There are cosmologies in which the universe is closed, but not the galaxy. I've never heard this terminology before. If the universe were closed, it probably wouldn't look too different. The exact redshift dependence of the distant galaxies would be slightly different, but that's about it.
