You're absolutely correct about instrument techs. You'll find that about 95% of techs don't understand what they're doing when they attempt to manually tune a process controller.

Worse yet, modern controllers are automatically adjusting of the Gain, Integral and Derivative functions, with just the touch of a button. Just stand back looking cool, while it cycles itself through the Process Reaction Curve in response to a Step Change it initiates. Then the tech can go for coffee while the production people swirl in his wake, marveling at his esoteric knowledge.

In fact, in all trades and professions the bottom 95% is not the cut we prefer to deal with. Almost invariably the top 5% is who we go to for answers, because they consider it to be their life work, not just a job to get money for the weekend drunk.
