One more thought. 25 years ago it was at least slightly cheaper to make a Newtonian than to buy one. That is no longer true. The cost of big Dobs has come down so far that you'll lose money making one. Still, there's nothing to match the satisfaction of knowing that you ground the mirror yourself, perfect to within millonths of an inch, with tools no more complex than your bare hands, plus a pinhole light source and a knife-edge to test the figure.
