One can be sure the photos are untouched/unaltered because

1) they are corroborated by NASA as originals available on the NASA site www.msss.com

2) Imagery can be examined on a pixel by pixel basis and experienced eyes can note details that show they are not altered

3) Simple Rationality would dictate these would be unaltered. You dont think NASA is altering imagery and introducing "artificial constructs" to that imagery in order to make further Mars missions more immediate, do you? I doubt NASA would want to do this..for obvious reasons..

But also JPL who is sending the non manned missions, ie. the robotic missions, would not *choose* to have things found that would hasten the rush to manned missions and lose their control of the project work.

Regarding your expressed difficulty in recognizing features in the imagery: Perhaps you need to first view the entire image as a whole and learn to recognize "normal" features in it and learn to read the topography itself before you force yourself to judge what is presented as an "artificial" feature. Image analysis is a science, but it is also an inate skill that that persons have or dont have. Some just are so challenged in reading imagery that all they can see is turmoil and swirls. Analysis of the imagery takes a lot of time and patience...
