Other considerations: when last I checked several months ago, the eyepieces that came with the RA version of the ETX-90 were the mediocre Modified Acromat type (a.k.a. Kellner class). These are reasonable with long-focal-ratio scopes like the ETX, but perhaps other scopes might come with somewhat better Plossl eyepieces. The eyepiece makes up half the optics. The ETX optical tube itself is fine. I use one as the guide scope on my 10-inch LX-200 for astrophotography.
The ETX finder is mediocre.
On the other hand, there are hundreds of third-party accessories for the ETX series, unlike other small scopes. Check out Shutan.com for a sample. Also, Scopetronix.com carries a screw-on solar filter for the ETX, so there's no worry of its falling off when you show schoolkids the Sun.
