Hooray! got problem fixed; scope no longer points in wrong direction; it was the equatorial mount that changed everything.
If you get an equatorial mount you MUST tell scope you want a polar alignment; the manual seems to imply a choice, but you can not choose "auto align".
We're using the scope without the mount for now and choosing auto align until we know the scope and sky better.
