I believe that God was invented by anceint humans to explain phenomena that they couldn't understand. The greeks created Zeuss to explain thunder and lightning. The Druids invented gods that dealt with nature. As more and more things are being answered by science, fewer and fewer people believe that there is a god. Christianity and Judaism invented single all-powerful gods because they wanted a single mighty eing that they could look up to. Still, they used god to explain things that they didn't understand. I think that ventually science will supplant theism, and then, few or no people will believe in a god.
