I've written a few variable-star observational papers in Astronomy, so I've made a small contribution to our knowledge of the universe, but my confidence in science is higher than most posters. Despite its weaknesses, science is the best we have. Nothing else I see: religion, superstition, UFOs, Astrology, psychic friends, etc. can match it. Science is not as comforting as my former Mormon views, but it's all there is.

It's like the child who realizes that Santa Clause doesn't exist. It was nice while the magic lasted, but now they have to realize that it's the people and things they see around them they have to deal with to maximize their Christmas stash, not some supernatural friend.

When are you going to give up on your Santa Clause (God).
