Think of it: Billions and billions of humans running around, each under the hypnotic spell of a single truth, all these truths identical, and all logically incompatible with one another: "Mine is the correct view of how things really are." And you are one of these humans, living your life in the thrall of a logical absurdity.

Unfortunately, however, self-righteousness seldom presents itself to us in such naked form. Belonging as we do to a species whose members justify their actions morally, we are designed to think of ourselves as right, our behavior as defensible and our beliefs as true, even when these propositions are objectively dubious.
