God did a marvolous thing when He created this physical universe. We can only try to understand parts of His model. I'm not sure what the string theory is, but if it doesn't match up with the account in the bible, I would put some more effort into fine tunning the string theory.

About how long it took God to create this physical universe: seven 24 hour days (counting the one He rested). He created day out of the night so that we could see that it was one day (from the Jewish perspective, night is the start of every 24 hour period). He created the sun and moon after that so that we could associate the properties of both with night and day (day is the source, night is the absence of day; understand?). He then created the first human on the third day (not the last), so that we could see His design on this physical universe: time; Adam wasn't God (he couldn't exist outside the time model); therefor, when the days went by (in creation), they were 24 hour days (that same first human, Adam has an explicit geneology--who his children were and how long he lived).

Yes, God did create the physical universe for us. Adam was split into Adam and Eve before God was done creating. He made the first human pure enough that they could procreate and fill the Earth. They lived long enough to do this because they had pure gene's, and there was a protection around the earth (a water canopy that created a hyperbaric atmosphere and protected from harmful radiation or bacteria).
