I disagree with your mom. Atheism does not mean lack of conscience altogether. There are plenty of 'religious' (seeming) folks who lack conscience. You don't HAVE to believe in God to believe in the value of 'goodness'. You appreciate the value all the more, however, I think, when you do believe in God, knowing the goodness of an act is not limited just to the space and time wherein it occurred but has far reaching effect. Perhaps a person's conduct/record are of more value than their publicly-claimed moral bearings in determining a presidential candidate, etc., you know? |
