I disagree with my mom, too. My point is that plenty of people hold that point of view. Very often people with closed minds naturally associate one belief with another, more aberrant one. Examples: Atheism and immorality. Anarchism and terrorism. Homosexuality and pedophilia. And so on and so on, people make unfair comparisons and generalizations.

The thing is, believers as a group tend to be rather closed minded. The Bible has often been proven incorrect? Well, it was written so long ago, the authors didn't know better. Some aspects of God seem to contradict laws of physics? Well, God is far too great and powerful for science to understand. Something good happens? God is good. Something bad happens? God works in mysterious ways. God hasn't shown his face in 2000 years? It's a test of our faith. There are countless religions, how can you follow one? Well, my religion is the only one with true divine inspiration. How can you make that claim with no evidence? Well, that's what faith is all about.

These are typical answers, all of which I've heard several times. They're just SO contrived and ignorant that it makes my head hurt just thinking about it. People like this are why atheism would never function on a national scale, these people need something to cling to.

Like a child hiding from monsters under a blanket.
