:: The light was in an opaque medium before it was released. The photons were in existence, but they were constantly being absorbed and re-emitted in the opaque universe. It was like the entire universe was a dielectric full of more or less free electrons. But when the temp of the universe cooled to below 3000 K, the electrons were absorgbed by nuclei and were no longer free to absorb light. So for the first time the light propagation freely with only a fraction of it being absorbed or scattered. The background microwave radiation that we detect today is the original light of the big-bang, but it did not start to propagate freely until 30,000 years after the big bang. |
