"Columbus argued that the earth was round."
this was his argument since the sailors and ships mainly sailed near coast lines and would try not to sail out too far off where they could not see the land any longer for fear that they may get lost. food was not ever too much of concern for professional sailors who knew how to fish with nets!!

Fishing has always been and still is a major part of the mariners life!! without it they can not survive as it is their way of life!!

As for Mr.Rich I do not know what books he gets his information from.
