So, Why Bother With Science?

Why do we have to find out what makes everything tick, spend a gazillion to go to school, get grants, work long hours, etc etc, contend with criticism with findings?

What do you suppose makes the WANTING to know 'tick'? Wouldn't it be easier to be hunters and gatherers and cultivators and just get stuff done?
