The Rules of Moses, the Quabala, the Bagavatum and Modern Physics
Somewhere in the Talmud, Moses gives us Rules for developing new laws and resolving conflicting laws. Conflicting laws are resolved by finding the underlying essence of each law that makes them consistent. I wish I could remember the several rules for creating new laws.
In my opinion nowhere has the fruits of this approach (resolving conflicting laws) been more beneficial than in developing the theories of modern physics. Theories are of course mathematical statements of the laws of physics. Now the program of modern physics has proceeded without any knowledge of the Rules of Moses. Yet I find it interesting that Moses anticipated a large portion of the process of modern physics.
Examples of combining conflicting theories, taken from page 5 of Rovelli’s on-line book, Quantum Gravity:
1. Combining the Keplerian orbits with Galilean physics led to Newtonian gravity
2. Combining Maxwell theory with Galilean physics led to Special Relativity
3. Combining special relativity with Newtonian mechanics led to general relativity
4. Combining special relativity and non-relativistic quantum mechanics led to the discovery of anti-particles
What are the essences that underlie each combination: first, the concept of mass and its mathematical gravitational field; second, the speed of light being constant; third, space being a gravitational field, etc.
The present endeavor of pure physics is to combine quantum theory and general relativity as exemplified by string theory and loop quantum gravity. And soon string theory will be combined with loop quantum gravity. In both cases, recent results suggest that space is derived from fields, even in string theory. But it appears the LQG is the better theory for cosmology, predicting the origins of the big bang, inflation and dark energy; whereas string theory is better for microscopic effects explaining particle entanglement, etc.
I find LQG more appealing. But since this is a god & science forum, it is best to keep in mind that Quabala cosmology supports string theory. From the Encyclopedia Brittanica:
Sefer Yetzira... Besides the numerology that the three numbers: 10, 22 and 32 correspond to the number of dimensions to create fermions, the number of compactified dimensions of bosons, and the degree of symmetry in string theory, a reading of the book tells us how the 10 dimensions of fermion creation are compactified down to 4 dimensional spacetime.
On the other hand, the Hindu Bagavatum suggests that universes are born out of cosmic eggs the size of mustard seeds, which seems to support the coming LQG cosmology of baby universes being born from black hole singularities.
Perhaps the Rules of Moses for jewish law should be applied to conflicting religions as well. What are the underlying essences that make all religions valid?
