Interesting to me, he got his PhD in 1966, from the U. of Rochester and immediately joined the U. of Arizona as a professor, where he still is.

Rochester and Arizona are considered to two best schools in optics in the world. I also got my PhD in 1966 but was not smart enough to become a professor in any school.
