The conventional assumption is that evolution is a mindless process. This assumption is validated to the extent that the demonstrably mindless aspects of the theory explain life as we know it.

Just how well Darwin explains the myriad forms of extant and extinct biological life…depends on who you ask.

The answer you will get, is predicated as much on prior assumptions as it is on evidence. The evidence is shared by both theist and non-theist, after all.

As a theist, I expect order in both the natural world and the spiritual. Newton probably would not have been surprised that this century brought us the anthropic principle. Pastuer would not have been surprised that biology is ruled by the order that is defined by the DNA molecule.

I am not sure one can say the same for the travelers on the other side of the theistic/nontheistic equation.
