They did understand that they shouldn't listen to Satan, when they did what they knew was wrong then the wrong became the first evil commited by man. Before this man had commited no wrong and frankly I believe that the reason that it was a fruit is because it is something any body can easily resist! Thus it shows how easily man can be decieved and tricked.
