They were mostly deists. They invoked god to lend moral force to their arguments against England at the same time that they keep slaves. So the country was founded by a bunch of hypocrires. Seems not much has changed as far as the rulers go.

However, in the last 50 years we find that blacks and other minorities, especially women, are finally recieving the rights promised to them by those hypocrites. So at least up to the Raygun administration, this country has become more and more moral. But since Raygun, I have to admit that the country and especially its politicians have been backsliding.
