Not one to argue for or against constant light speed.

The article said,
"...next, the Harvard-Smithsonian scientists stop the signal pulse of light by gradually turning off the control beam, which causes more atoms to be mixed with fewer photons, thereby increasing the polariton mass and further reducing
the signal pulse's speed."

They said more particles means slower (apparent?) light speed. They also said light his harnessed in the atomic spin of specially prepared atoms.
This implies to me that light may have constant
attributes of which speed is not one. But it also may be that the quality of "speed" itself is an
illusion of our perceptions and current equations.
After all, we've only been 'modern' for a few generations. When we've had a few centuries more, who would be surprised if new wiring diagrams make our present physics look like a quaint crystal radio.
