The human species is so much more incredibly diverse, complicated, and colorful than your group leaders will have you believe at youth group. Christianity is just one little, isolated pocket of experience in an infinitude of wonder. If you're willing to look past the corruption and general silliness out there, looking for all mankind has to offer can be a far more enlightening experience than Bible-reading. It's real world experience, something in my experience fundies are lacking in. For example, I know someone at college who is an alchoholic pot smoker, who also happens to be a practicing shaman. He is probably one of the weirdest people I have ever met, but one of the most interesting to be around. My roommate, by contrast, was a rabid fundamentalist (yeah, last year was a match made in heaven) who always gave that fellow a 20-foot berth when walking past him, always averting his eyes to avoid conversation or contact of any type. His inherent prejudices against people and their outward appearances clouded him to the possibility of getting to know the guy, who is a lot of fun to hang out with. This is the problem, as I see it, with many fundies. They live an isolated life surrounded by fundy friends and fundy parents, but rarely get into the gritty side of the world, the sometimes painful and melancholy side, just to see what their reaction will be.
