If the fruit fly was thrown into an unfamiliar environment, it would either adapt or die. If a croc was thrown into an unfamiliar environment, it would either adapt or die. But in their current environments, they have reached 'critical mass,' so to speak. An evolutionary dead-end, until the environment changes.

Why evolve if they're good now? Because many species can easily be better. Bipedal apes were more suited to the African savannah than partially bipedal ones (hence, our evolution) Jeez, man, I don't know what is so hard about this.
