Scott,

A few years ago two researching teams that were investigating type IA supernovas (which help us measure distances to galaxies that are billions of light years away) came to the conclusion that the universe is accelerating. It would appear that some mysterious force is causing the universe to accelerate quite unexpectantly compared to what the effects of gravitation would require. The 'Big Crunch' is looking less feasible and the 'Big Spread' is looking more likely. Or as Aurino might say, B.S. is looking more likely.
