I think Horgan was saying that while science could go on forever it won't becase of societal biases towards that particular arena.

Science could go on forever, but won't and can't due to our cultures fascination with quick fixes.

We are a society more interested in Viagra than than smashing subatomic particles, Rogaine that discovering a true homo sapien lineage, and Prozace than unifying cosmology with the quantum world. We live in a bubbly gum culture full of ridiculous claims and fraudulent charlatans. Science is becoming an industury that must cater to stock holders and profit driven corporate raiders. Our society will refuse to fund science that will not supply it with "new" and "improved" fake puke puddles and the "lateset" and "tastiest" dog biscuits that not only clean teeth but strengthen gums. All of this arguing if futile, because ignorance is selected for in out culture and is running rampant.
